What's the deal with the second city?

What indeed.
The Second City, as it goes, is probably the closest any city so far have come to defeating the Masters and the Bazaar on their mission. It was definitely, almost certainly, Amarna, in Egypt. A rather excellent breakdown on the matter can be found here.
Amarna is, on the whole, a rather strange capital as capitals go. It was created and abandoned well within one lifetime- fifteen years or so, apparently- which makes it a rather strange choice for the Bazaar. It was, on the whole, a trick. A rather excellent one, on the whole.
The Masters really don’t care for the Second City; if you look at the dates between cities, it’s fairly easy to see why. The Second City would have fallen between 1347 and 1332 BC; the Third City, Mayan in origin, would have had to had fallen some time in the 10th or 11th century AD. Which is quite a significant delay! To the best of our knowledge, the daughters of the Pharaoh made a deal with the Bazaar… and then chained it, somehow, leaving it powerless to do anything for a hellofa long time.
Getting stuck in the same city for many many years is not exactly a pleasant experience, especially when you really just want to get a move on and finish with your service to a giant space crab; hence, the antipathy the Masters hold for the Second City. The only Master who didn’t seem to mind the Second City much was Mr Eaten… but that’s a different story entirely. A different story which you can read some rambling musings on here!
